Ultimately I may have shared her presence on 4chan first and gave her a name (by accident) but that's nothing compared to what followed just in a few days.
Thank the community of people who took what little I gave them and expanded on it, creating what Derpy Hooves is today. She's the product of the fandom as a whole, not mine alone.

Regarding the "Censorship" accident:

I want to make this clear beforehand: I never, ever meant to use "Derpy" in the sense of slur for "mentally challenged".
That meaning may exists, but by the time FiM first aired, it was pretty much replaced in the mind of most people by "being silly, making a mistake", "being a fool" at worst, and it was linked by many with the image of googly eyes. That's what made me choose it as her name that day back in 2010. Nothing else.
Insulting anyone was far from my thoughts.

When "The Last Roundup" first aired, almost a year ago (time flies), I was amazed by seeing Derpy having such a big speaking role, and I rejoiced together with most of the fandom.
Unfortunately, because of a group of people misunderstanding this and the creative team giving her an unusual and potentially misleading voice (even if I actually liked it, indeed because it was so far from the norm for a female character and I felt it did fit her pretty well), she got pointed at as an offensive representation of disabled people. I followed the events closely, saddened greatly by the fact that those fellow fans felt this way toward her. This was made even worse when some time later it was revealed that the writer for the episode, Amy Keating Rogers, actually had disabled son, and she herself never heard of that older meaning of the word, created by South Park more than a decade earlier.

I'm not angry with Hasbro for "giving in" and alter the episode, since it's in their interest and in the interest of the show survival to avoid such controversy (this is after all a TV show for kids, and one made to support a toy line to begin with, regardless of its surprising quality). It's obvious to me that no one wanted to insult anyone.
And I'm not angry with those who were offended by her and misunderstood her, because it was their right to voice their opinion, regardless of whether I agreed with them or not.

It just saddens me that all this went so out of control, and I know I'm not the only one. But at the same time, I'm kinda relieved that she got left to her role of background character and Easter egg for the fans (for now). Even if this season she didn't appear as much.
Background characters like her are one of the most beautiful gifts a creative team can give to its audience, leaving us the freedom to play with them and expand on them, free from the constraints of the original work they came from, and I think this gift is part of what truly helped making this amazing show such an unexpected success.

Thank you for writing me, enjoy the rest of Season 3, good luck with that charity comic project you're collaborating with, and don't worry, even if she was to never appear again in the show, which is unlikely given the recent news that apparently she may get a new voiced appearance in the future (can't find the link), even then, until there are fans of the show, Derpy Hooves will never go away.

As I always say, I did very little in the end and, while I did share her first appearance and named her by complete accident on 4chan, the community made Derpy what she is today.

I tend to stay in the background but people seem to think I'm difficult to find (or dead) while instead I've been almost always logged in a IRC chatroom usually linked in the general threads on 4chan. And Last year I dropped in the Reddit post about Derpy's birthday, too (I'm a regular user of r/mylittlepony).

I'd love to be more active and give back to this great community more but I had a bit of problems in the last months and only now I'm starting to get back in gear.

I hope to start drawing regularly again soon and maybe work on some pony related projects I couldn't work on because of my still recent problems.
